The thing that is not taught
The thing that is not taught
We do not teach our grief in education, its incarnations and instances and iterations.
We do not teach the incalculable weight and depth of our grief, the invisible presence in all our endeavors.
We do not teach the harrowing, lingering grief of those denied learning, the sharp, brittle grief of the deniers, the panicked, frozen grief of those who watched and did not speak.
We do not teach the grief buried in school graveyards, ghosts of children and cultures, bodies shackled to the pages of our collective history.
We do not teach that grief binds us in witness as education fails, as learning withers, as we attempt to escape the other.
We do not teach grief.
